On New Years Day 2026, I was driving to my sister’s house for lunch. On the way I passed a couple walking with their Golden Retriever. The dog was off-leash, and carried a long branch (big stick) from one of the trees on the grass lined pathway. As I observed the dog I couldn’t help but admire his absolute joy. His wildly wagging tail ruled his entire body; his gait was jubilant; the bounce in his step revealed he was merrily living life with his amazing treasure.
As I continued my drive, that image played in my head again and again, and it dawned on me that the new year should be approached with the same enthusiasm.
My big stick should be joy in knowing God never leaves me alone. God provides my needs. God shows grace in abundance. God loves me beyond measure. This amazing treasure should excite me, rule my heart, and give me hope.
In a world that feels unbalanced, chaotic, and uncertain – may we recognize the importance of God’s availability to us every moment of every day; may we accept the truth of His care for us; and may we walk in the knowledge that we are truly blessed by His love.
In 2026, may we walk in assurance – that like that big stick – God is ready and willing to be the source of our joy.
