Here we are on the doorstep of Christmas.  It’s the time of year meant to inspire peace, hope, and cheer.   Yet so often we miss the joy of the holiday because we’re overwhelmed by the fast-paced chaos and expectations.

Of course, the third Magi gift above was deliberately misspelled.  But it prompts the question – what do we bring to the Christmas season?  Do we exude excitement, enthusiasm, anticipation?  Do we display delight, cheerfulness, good will?  Or is our holiday offering a murmur.

A murmur can indicate a heart that is out of rhythm.  Is our heart expressing joy in the season or is it joy-challenged?  Sadly, self-imposed perfection – the perfect gift, perfect meal, perfect day – does not inspire joy.  Rather it detracts from the blessing of gathering together.  This season may our heart rhythm be reset.  May we abandon restrictive expectations and truly enjoy the gift of family and friends.

A murmur is also a low almost indistinct voice – possibly grumbling or complaining.  Are we happy for the opportunity to celebrate the season, or are we just waiting for it to be over?  When our greatest wish for the holiday is to be “done”, the opportunity to experience peace and hope is squandered.  Truly, stress is the thief that will quickly steal the season’s promise.  May we quiet ourselves, then weigh and adjust our thoughts, motives, and actions.  May our grumbling be silenced.  May we joyfully cherish the moments given and the memories we will make.

In the story of the three wise men, we will forever remember the offerings they brought in celebration of God’s gift – gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  This holiday, how will we be remembered by family and friends?  What do we bring to the season – expressions of joy or murmuring.
